Decision about Composting
From Danae:
The City of Saskatoon will be conducting a pilot project this late summer / autumn in which they will pick up organic matter from community gardens in conjunction with the current residential green bin program.
The general criteria will be:
Large round, former residential, garbage bins will be used as there are no green bins remaining at this time. The bins would need to be purchased for $10 each.
Bin must be located in a place where it is accessible to the city truck to use the automated arm. Example: along a roadway or alley.
There will be a fee of approximately $10 - $20 per month for this bi-weekly service.
I personally would prefer to try to compost our organic matter at the garden but I have been made aware that very few gardens in the city have been successful at this for various reasons.
Does any one have an opinion on this topic? Should we look into participating in this pilot project or should we attempt to compost on site?

Weeds in garden space
From Gord Androsoff:
Hello everyone,
I
have visited quite a few gardens in the past week and half or so.
Things are looking good and there appears to be potential for alot of
produce in many gardens.
One
thing that I noticed in several gardens is that small numbers of some
weedy species have been allowed advance to the stage where seed
structures are present. I realize that some species (such as redroot
pigweed...which looks similar to amaranth) are being used for edible
purposes but I have seen a fair bit of lambs quarters and sow thistle
which are in advanced stages of maturity.
Gardens
on municipal land may be visited by the City weed inspector and
controlling weedy species before they advance towards a seed production
stage is part of the garden responsibility in the contract with the
City. I am aware of one garden on municipal property that has received a
warning in this regard.
Thanks for being diligent on this.

Potluck Update
I apologize for forgetting the link to the potluck planning. The potluck and meeting will take place at 6pm on Thursday, August 23.
Also a note from Deb:
On August 8th I went to dig up what I thought would be ‘baby’ potatoes only to find these lovelies. One hill yielded 3.25 pounds and 9 potatoes, and they’re not even fully mature yet. I was impressed, for a site that was quack grass and dandelions just over 2 months ago! I chopped up the vines and dug them back into the hill to compost. I plan to bring potato salad to the potluck!

Free Bricks!
This was posted on the Garden facebook page by Melanie Vanderlinde:
Free
Bricks!! A friend in the neighbourhood has a red dumpster full of
bricks for the taking. Lots of full ones in great shape. But act fast
'cause they are sadly going to the dump in the next day or two.

Dead end where Hazen runs into Prince of Whales Ave. Red dumpster. Just pull up and load up from the dumpster.
