Compost Bins
As we approach the end of our growing season, most of us will soon be making use of our fantastic new compost bins.
To help the compost bin function at the best of its ability the compost committee have put together a few rules to help us all stay on the same page.
How to use the bins:
- Chop material into small pieces. The smaller, the better. Nothing longer than 1ft. There are pruning shears in the white bin by the shelter. Shovels can also used to chop up material on the ground.
- Water if needed. The compost should be as damp as a wrung out sponge.
- Turn if needed. More frequent turning will speed up the composting process. Not all gardeners are physically capable of doing this so don't worry if you can't. Some people will only be able to turn the top part. It will depend on how full the bin is also.
- Only put in material from the garden. No outside leaves, kitchen scraps, etc.
Communication:
- Although this year we will only be adding (making) compost, signs will be posted in the future letting gardeners know which bins to add to and which you can take from.
- Compost committee members are more than happy to speak with other garden members to let them know how to use the bins, answer any questions they may have and provide assistance if necessary.
Fall Cleanup
- We will have members of the compost committee available to assist gardeners with composting. This includes encouraging people to allow their excess plant material to compost on their plot by digging it in or letting it sit over winter and rototilling it in the spring.
- We will be available to help chop material that is going into the compost bins. Each fall we will likely need to fill all three bins and consolidate in the spring when things have shrunk down.
