Many people and businesses support and work closely with our garden.
Here is a list of few to keep in mind that have made big differences for our little garden.

North Park Richmond Heights Community Association

Garden Update - June 1 2016

I was just at the garden and it is such a good feeling to see everyone's gardens coming to life. With our veggies and flowers comes the weeds. It take all of us to stay on top and try to prevent more spreading. If you have weeds around your plot, please take the time to pull them.

All weeds go in the green bin by the shelter. Weeds can not go in our compost at this time. If you have a few extra minutes help your fellow gardeners to keep on top of weeds throughout the garden. We have a lot of common areas that can always use some extra attention.

Pictures of the garden, conversations and discussions and up to date information is all available to everyone on the google community page. Please join.

Tina found us some vole emitters and placed a couple around the garden to help prevent the mole issues that some of us had last year. Thanks Tina.

Mulch is not here yet but will be coming shortly. Take a look around your garden to see if your area needs a mulch touch up this year.

The next steering group meeting will take place on June 15th @ 6pm in the garden. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Some compost points. This season we will use the 1st compartment of the composts system for all garden plant material (with the exception of weeds which go in the green bin). Material that is larger or more robust needs to be cut down to smaller pieces for it to break down nicely and quickly.
The compost is being turned over and watered regularly and is looking very nice. If you would like to help with the compost, there is a tab on our google community page for compost conversations.
If you have any questions let me know (Amanda:  amm417@mail.usask.ca)

Monday, May 2, 2016

Well this incredible weather is really getting me excited for the upcoming gardening season! This is just an update with what is already going on at the garden.

First, a warm welcome to all new gardeners!

Next, we have  a new site for communication between members.
This is a great way to communication with one another aside from email or seeing people at the garden. So feel free to login and ask questions, post discussions and information and of course we all want to see the beautiful pictures that people take through the season.

To join the group, just click on the following link and login with a google account (non google members will have to set up an account but minimal information and time required to do so)

The more people we have using the site the more enjoyable it will be for everyone!

Manure and compost will be arriving at the garden (if it isn't already there) by Friday.
Rototilling will take place this Saturday May 7th at 1pm. That gives people a bit of time to get the compost onto their plot before being rototilled.

Next Steering Committee meeting will be held on May 18th, @ 6:00 pm at the garden.

If you have any questions/ comments / suggestions or concerns feel free to post on the google community page or contact a member of the Steering Committee, or contact Tina @ 306-477-1703 or tnivon@hotmail.com

Compost Bins

As we approach the end of our growing season, most of us will soon be making use of our fantastic new compost bins.
To help the compost bin function at the best of its ability the compost committee have put together a few rules to help us all stay on the same page.

How to use the bins:
  • Chop material into small pieces.  The smaller, the better.  Nothing longer than 1ft.  There are pruning shears in the white bin by the shelter.  Shovels can also used to chop up material on the ground.
  • Water if needed.  The compost should be as damp as a wrung out sponge.
  • Turn if needed.  More frequent turning will speed up the composting process.  Not all gardeners are physically capable of doing this so don't worry if you can't.  Some people will only be able to turn the top part.  It will depend on how full the bin is also.
  • Only put in material from the garden.  No outside leaves, kitchen scraps, etc.
Communication:
  • Although this year we will only be adding (making) compost, signs will be posted in the future letting gardeners know which bins to add to and which you can take from.
  • Compost committee members are more than happy to speak with other garden members to let them know how to use the bins, answer any questions they may have and provide assistance if necessary.
Fall Cleanup
  • We will have members of the compost committee available to assist gardeners with composting.  This includes encouraging people to allow their excess plant material to compost on their plot by digging it in or letting it sit over winter and rototilling it in the spring.
  • We will be available to help chop material that is going into the compost bins. Each fall we will likely need to fill all three bins and consolidate in the spring when things have shrunk down.
